Dr. Sachin Sharma, Associate Professor of Law at Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla (HPNLU) and Director of the Centre for Human Rights and Disability Studies, represented a high-level delegation at the United Nations Social Forum in Geneva on October 30th and 31st, focusing on the “Role of Education in Strengthening All Human Rights.” Dr. Sharma utilized the platform to advocate for a transformative approach to inclusive education and the rights of persons with disabilities.
During the deliberation, Dr. Sharma strongly emphasized the necessity of giving the central stage to people with disabilities themselves, underscoring the significance of the first-person narrative in policy deliberation and implementation measures. He argued that the presence of students with disabilities in the classroom naturally fosters a sensitive and understanding environment among other learners. He further asserted that all curriculum must be revamped to focus on disability-inclusivity-centric literature, and called for a conscious effort to break the existing structural “intellectual” barriers impeding true inclusion.
Concluding his address, Dr. Sharma specifically highlighted the crucial and non-negotiable role of the central and state governments towards protecting and promoting the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. His message called for robust governmental enforcement of policies, resource allocation, and a commitment to creating an accessible and equitable educational system as mandated by law. His participation solidified the need for human rights principles to be at the core of educational reform globally.
Prof. (Dr.) Priti Saxena, Vice-Chancellor, HPNLU, Shimla, commended Dr. Sharma’s contribution, stating that his representation at such a prestigious global platform not only brings honor to the University but also reinforces its mission of advancing human rights, inclusivity, and social justice through education and research.
